Ko Ngā Aukaha All in for Tamariki
Educators, parents and whānau across Aotearoa are passionate about making sure our education system fulfils the potential of every tamaiti. Ngā Aukaha All in for Tamariki is a campaign to address the underfunding in the education system, so that all tamariki can access the support they need to thrive.
Ongoing research means we have expanded our knowledge of the different learning needs of tamariki. However, while our understanding has evolved, the funding and resourcing needed to support tamariki hasn’t.
Our current system means that our youngest learners are waiting an average of 80 days to access an early intervention service. Access to funding is no easier, with approximately one third of ORS (Ongoing Resource Scheme) funding applications are being rejected.
When we support children from an early age and throughout their education, it enables them to live healthy and fulfilling lives. An inclusive education system means all tamariki will thrive.

To solve this issue, the government needs to:
Fund a dedicated Learning Support Coordinator or SENCO in every school and early childhood centre.
Expand the ORS criteria and increase the funding available so that it is based on need, rather than a fixed amount of funding available.
Increase dedicated teacher aide funding in early childhood centres and schools.
Increase the number of specialists (e.g. psychologists, physiotherapists and resource teachers) to meet student need.
Develop and provide greater professional development (including career pathways) and specialist opportunities for educators to develop their understanding of learning support, including Initial Teacher Education.

The purpose of this campaign is to utilise the collective power of educators, parents, students and organisations to ensure the government takes urgent action.
All tamariki are taonga. This campaign is about challenging ableism at all levels, so that the education system works for all.

What does Ngā Aukaha mean?
Aukaha meaning the lashings that support and reinforce the body of the waka. Ngā Aukaha represents everyone involved in supporting the tamariki and holding the kaupapa together for the good of mokopuna.
Ko te tikanga o aukaha, ko ngā here e tautoko ana, e turuki ana i te riu o te waka. He kanohi a Ngā Aukaha mō ngā tāngata katoa kei roto i ngā mahi tautoko tamariki, me te pupuri i te kaupapa mō te painga o ngā mokopuna.
What do we mean by learning support?
The Ministry of Education define learning support as the additional support that some children need to engage and achieve in education. This covers the support provided by external specialists and in-centre and school educators and support staff.
